Shoreline Planting and Runoff Around a Lake Lot
How shoreline planting, hard surfaces and runoff reach lake water, and what a lot owner can plan before calling in a landscape professional.

What an angler reads on the surface of a bay often starts at the lot line, because the shoreline decides how much of a rainfall runs off the land instead of sinking into it. A shore stripped to lawn sends water, soil and whatever the lawn carried straight toward the lake; a shore with layered planting holds its rain, slows it and cleans it on the way down. For anyone who owns part of a shoreline, the planting plan is water quality work, and it is worth doing deliberately.
The same logic guides professional work on land far from any lake. Which planting actually slows the water?

Lower shrubs and grasses catch the water running off the upper layer and slow it. Ground layer plants and a mulch of leaf litter take the last of the speed out and let the water sink. A lawn has none of those layers, which is why a mown edge to the water line sheds its rain so readily.
The good news is that a shore does not need to be returned to wilderness to work. A band of unmown growth a few metres deep along the water, a path of stepping stones where the boat lands and a rain garden where a gully used to run will carry most of the benefit, and the lot keeps its view and its access. Can a shore owner plan the work without a contractor?
Most of the first steps are within reach of any owner with a spade and a season. Walk the lot in a heavy rain and watch where the water runs; mark the gullies and the bare patches; count the hard surfaces between the high ground and the water. That walk produces a plan more honest than any brochure, and it names the two or three changes that matter before any money is spent.

How does the shore work show up in the fishing?
Within a season or two the evidence is visible from a boat.
